Rethinking Recruitment and Retention in Dentistry
If you’ve been hiring in the dental industry lately, you already know, it’s not easy. Qualified candidates are in high demand, competition is fierce, and turnover rates continue to climb. The truth is, many practices are still hiring the old way: posting a generic job ad, hoping for the perfect fit, and crossing their fingers that the new hire will “just work out.”
But the most successful practices, the ones that grow strong, stable, and cohesive teams, are doing something different. They’re hiring for character and training for skill.
1. Hire for Character
Technical skills can be taught, but attitude, empathy, and integrity can’t. A dental assistant who takes initiative, a hygienist who connects with patients, or a receptionist who radiates positivity can transform the patient experience and team culture.
When interviewing, look beyond the résumé. Ask questions that reveal values, problem-solving, and communication style. For example:
- “Tell me about a time you helped a patient feel more comfortable.”
- “What’s most important to you in a work environment?”
These questions uncover personality fit — the heart of long-term retention.
2. Build an Onboarding Experience, Not an Orientation
The first 90 days determine whether a new hire feels connected or uncertain. Instead of a one-day orientation, think of onboarding as a relationship-building process.
- Assign a mentor or “buddy.”
- Schedule regular check-ins.
- Introduce your office culture and vision early.
When people feel welcomed, supported, and valued, they stay, and they thrive.
3. Create a Culture of Growth
Retention starts with opportunity. Today’s dental professionals want more than a paycheque, they want growth, purpose, and belonging. Offer continuing education, leadership pathways, and open communication about goals.
Recognize effort publicly. Celebrate milestones. Encourage collaboration. When your team feels invested in, they’ll invest back into your practice.
4. Listen Before You Lose Them
Exit interviews are valuable, but stay interviews are even better. Regularly ask your team:
- “What do you enjoy most about working here?”
- “What would make your day-to-day easier?”
You’ll uncover small frustrations before they become reasons to leave, and you’ll build trust by showing you care.
5. Partner With the Right Recruitment Experts
Finding the right team members takes more than an online posting. It takes industry insight, experience, and genuine human connection, and that’s where we come in.
